If only the 9Nth Longwall Move and Sealing had proved “straightforward with minimum complications”

In my opinion the “risk assessment that had been conducted at the mine” was proved to be inadequate to deal with the actual risks present.

I am sure that it would be a fascinating document.

No doubt the Mines Inspectorate have a Copy that they “could/should/would” have used over the last 2 and a half years during their Investigation into the 9 Nth heating and fire ordered by Minister Lynham.

Today, 14 May 2018 a meeting was held at the Mines Inspectorate Office in Nelson Street Mackay.

Attending the meeting was Mr Les Marlborough and Mr Richard Gouldstone, Inspectors of Mines and Mr Marek Romanski, Underground Mine Manager, Mr Chris Rogers, Ventilation Officer and Mr Sudip Sharma Sapkota, Graduate Mining Engineer.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the proposed sealing of LW9 North at North Goonyella. Mr Romanski introduced Mr Rogers and Mr Sapkota.

Mr Rogers went on the present the planned method for sealing LW9 North at North Goonyella. The draft sealing management plan was discussed. The plan was based on a risk assessment that had been conducted at the mine. Current scheduling has the 9 North LW commencing LW relocation to LW10 North on 2 July 2018.

The method of sealing is to utilise Nitrogen inertisation using a Floxal Nitrogen generator unit and will follow a staged process as the Longwall shields are salvaged.

The method of sealing appeared to be straightforward with minimum complications. The draft sealing management plan was discussed with no significant issues identified at this time.

Mr Romanski stated that the intent was to formally submit the sealing management plan during the week commencing 21 May 2018 to allow the Inspectors adequate time to review the sealing management plan prior to sealing operations commencing.

Inspectors Gouldstone and Marlborough thanked Mr Romanski, Rogers and Sapkota for taking the time to come in and present the planned sealing operations for discussion.
